god save the queen
CBC played a special documentary just now: The Queen at 80. This, in occasion of HRH Queen Elizabeth II's 80th birthday this year, who is also the Head of State of countless independent countries like Canada and Australia.
It was interesting. To find out that she has been the Queen for 54 years and worked with 10 Prime Ministers of UK. And to find out that with a twist of fate, she became destined Queen. Her uncle, King Edward VIII, abdicted the throne as he chose love for a twice-divorced American over his duties, thus only her father taking over as King George VI.
I used to wonder how much the Monarchy mattered, especially in the modern world with Presidents and PMs being elected by citizens. But thank god for the Monarchy not being redundant. At least there will be someone to oppose and knock some bloody sense into tyrannical governments, if any gets elected, and not be so much of the big-brother-kind of authoritarian figure. It's also assuring to know that centuries of tradition with the Monarchy still survives, even with changes or glitches along the way.
Gosh, all these are making me so interested in British history once again. I studied that of King Henry VIII and his 8 wives, Queen Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada conquest, etc. when I was still in Junior High in Sayfol. Makes me pleased to know that I have lived, or am living, in countries that are were once under British rules and still all part of the Commonwealth.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!
